What a weekend! Over 4700 walkers, nearly 500 crew volunteers, the City of Toronto playing host and a heck of a celebration Saturday night in Downsview. We owe SO MUCH to the brave and passionate souls who walk in the Weekend to End Breast Cancer. Walkers raised $13 million last weekend! Rain (we had lots) did not dampen the smiles or wash away the tears as we remembered loved ones who have been diagnosed and died from this disease. We had all the senior doctors and research staff out for the walk. (See www.pmhf.ca for link or
www.endcancer.ca for the site with all the news). I enjoyed every single aspect from Day Zero, opening, camp (sleeping out in the famous blue pup tents was never better or easier after the walk and the hospitality and great food), to the bag piper sending us off Sunday and the BEST CLOSING CEREMONY EVER! The 96 year old Kitty Cohen was an inspiration as she finished all 60 km and danced (yes danced) her way across the closing to cheering walkers and admiring fans. Every person who walks has a story…every story is important to that walker or donor. We have thousands of stories to share. Why not come out and walk with us next year? You will have the weekend of your life and stories galour. Sad stories, warm stories, stories of courage and stories of hope. You will literally laugh your head off and, at times, cry a tear or two. It’s very emotional and very much a “life experience”. Mothers and daughters, survivors and friends, husbands and sons, out-of-towners, college students and 96 year olds, Starbucks drinkers and Tim Hortons’ fans, left and right, fit and not-so-fit…….everyone can walk and make a difference. Get the word out if you are a veteran or sign up right now if you have been on the fence. Train, fund raise, volunteer….step up and step forward. It’s a gift you will give and a gift you will receive. The Weekend to End Breast Cancer represents the best of the human spirit! Thanks walkers and volunteers and supporters!
