Till & McCulloch Discovered Stem Cells-Fifty years Ago

Posted by Paul

One of the world’s most important scientific discoveries happened February 1st, 1961 when a paper from two scientists at Princess Margaret Hospital’s OCI published THE paper on stem cells. That discovery of stem cells and the resulting work on cancer stem cells from the likes of John Dick, Ben Neel, Tak Mak and others has made Toronto a global powerhouse in stem cell research. Drs. Till and McCulloch are Canadian scientific heroes! The passing of Dr. McCulloch recently was an important part of the “remember and celebrate” ceremony which took place this week on Feb. 1st at PMH. This is discovery and the scientific “critical mass” around cancer stem cell research and related regenerative medicine is something every Canadian school kid should learn about and every Canadian be proud of!
