One of the Great Weekends of my Life

Posted by Paul

What a weekend….after nearly three years in planning we rode the Ride to Conquer Cancer last weekend. As I reflect on the power and success of the weekend I am in awe of what was accomplished. My overwhelming feeling is one of gratitude to all the riders, volunteers, staff and community of supporters. Getting something brand new off the ground is never easy. The event was planned down to nearly every detail and was a spectacular fundraising success. Collectively, we raised over $14 million for the Campbell Family Institute at The Princess Margaret. Historic and remarkable. Stunning really. No major accidents although a few minor ones. What I am left with most of all are the stories. The individual stories. The rider with one leg, the rider with the brain tumor given one year to live 2 years ago, the amazing personal stories about looking after loved ones with cancer, about struggling with pancratic cancer, with stage four breast cancer, with losing a loved one months before the ride, with finding another person to ride a tandem bike because a partner was lost to cancer……so many stories. And good times as well…..the friends met and made, the band on Saturday, the cold Steam Whistle beer at the end of a long day of riding, the beauty of the country side, the finishing at Niagara Falls. We had riders from 8 Canadian provinces and 16 US states. Every rider was working to conquer cancer. The Campbell Family Institute has a remarkable source of new funding. We have launched an extraordinary new force. It was one of the best weekends of my life. I am grateful to have been part of this. The stories will live on with me forever.

This was a great event! not only did you, your staff and the 2849 other riders do a great job it was something that became a personal physical goal for me.

Thanks for the delivery of a great event!

By the way, I was extremely impressed that you meet everyone on Friday night and even when people stopped you during what has a probably an extremely busy weekend you took the time to say hello.

Again thanks on behalf of the riders and the people you help by raising funds to help PMHF continue it's research.

During the Opening Ceremony, I was mesmerized by the grand sight of Riders cycling slowly through the gate on their quest to concur cancer. Their yellow blue “Concur Cancer” T-shirts were shining in the early morning sun. They looked so beautiful. They looked like a golden stream of hope.

I felt privileged to be part of it.
