GEE 20 In Toronto

Posted by Paul

Our offices are in the Hyrdo Building just north of PMH and are right in the middle of the protest zone for the G 20 meeting coming to Toronto this weekend. The fences and police presence are incredibly foreign to us in Toronto and I think are offensive to many Canadians (like me). If security is so important why not have the meeting on an aircraft carrier off Bora Bora? The members of the G 20 are public servants…..so why the $1 billion on security and fences to keep the public away from the “public servants”? I am not thrilled with the protesters either. Free speech is free speech after all but Canadians are polite and generally talk a lot more about what unites us as opposed to divides us. Finally, lots of heavy financial and economic lifting on the G 20 agenda. What about healthcare? What about chronic diseases? Or cancer? Cancer is a global killer of millions every year. The billions of $ for banks served the banking system but what if that money (maybe 5% of it) had been invested in cancer research and prevention? So the Gee 20 comes to Toronto. Hope its peaceful. Hope the civil servants actually get to see a couple of “real civilians” while they are in town. Wish Barack Obama could get away for a walk in the Beaches on the board walk or over to St. Lawrence Market for a back bacon on a bun…..as in “see a little of Toronto”.
