I am at a conference
today, September 26th speaking to a group of fundraising executives
at the Bell TIFF. I am talking about 5 “beach ball questions”. A
“beach ball question” is like a beach ball you try to hold under the water…..impossible
to hold down and it just has to pop to the surface. A beach ball question
is a question you just can’t keep down, you must answer it. So I am
posing 5 beach ball questions to my colleagues: 1. Why do we call our sector
not-for-profit? 2. What do you believe in? 3. What is your brand? 4. How will
you build your Social Profit brand? 5. Who do you work for? I have about 20
minutes to pose these questions. In the “Post-Google world, it’s not
about having the answers……everybody with an internet connection can get the
answer to just about anything……it’s about asking the RIGHT QUESTIONS! THE BEACH
BALL QUESTIONS!!! And yes, I have real beach balls for the presentation
and each of the 5 questions is written large on the beach ball. Of course
they are going to go off the stage and bounce around in the audience.
